One idea is to treat Gagnon and Collay as a macro model, and nest Roger Schank inside it. I have outlined this below, I would imagine that you could configure it in several ways. If you've got a big year-long course at a high level this pedagogical framework may give you the space and variety you're going to need to deliver your course and maintain student interest.
